Open Thread: Stephon Castle received his Rookie of the Year Award from some familiar faces

The Spurs quartet of ROTY award-winners were all together

On Tuesday evening, it was announced that Spurs guard Stephon Castle was named the NBA Rookie of the Year.

Wednesday afternoon, Castle received his trophy at the Spurs practice facility amid family, teammates, and an excited Spurs staff.

While it was a shame he couldn’t receive the honors in front of a capacity Frost Bank Center crowd in anticipation of an exciting playoff game, the Victory Capital Performance was nonetheless abuzz before the presentation began.

Before the ceremony multiple Spurs members were walking around gleefully. General Manager Brian Wright, coach Mitch Johnson, CEO R. C. Buford and players Keldon Johnson, De’Aaron Fox, and Riley Minix were all seen milling about with smiles.

When the ceremony began, Brian Wright spoke about why the Spurs had been so keen on Castle — his skill, his maturity, and his potential. He then said that there were better guests than he to present the trophy.

Castle was joined by David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Victor Wembanyama. All three won Rookie of the Year with the Spurs.

Castle is the fourth player Spurs franchise history to earn the ROTY honors.

The day before, Spurs commentator Jacob Tobey spoke with Castle about the announcement.

While Castle was confident he was going to be named the Rookie of the Year, he remained humble and spread the gratitude from God to his family to the team that believed in him from the start stating, “this is part of the unconditional support I got all year.”

While Castle joins Robinson, Duncan, and Wemby to be named Rookie of the Year, he is the first not to have been drafted in the top spot. As the fourth pick in the draft, he outshine Zaccharie Risacher, Alex Sarr, and Reed Sheppard as well as fellow nominee Jaylen Wells.

Although the presentation was understated, the presence of current players and legends served to remind everyone that this is just the beginning for this talented young man.
