White, Johnson and Weatherspoon may not be ready to play at the start of the season

It’s December, NBA teams have officially reported to training camp, and Gregg Popovich had his first official press conference of the new season. He covered several topics, including the team’s desire to make the playoffs and readiness to replicate the style of play that proved successful in the Bubble, but most notable was the revelation that Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, and Quinndary Weatherspoon may not be ready to play at the start of the regular season.

White is recovering from toe surgery performed back on August 21. (Although he suffered a knee injury in the Bubble, it is unclear when or how he hurt his toe.) Weatherspoon also suffered a knee injury in the Bubble and had surgery performed to remove cartilage debridement. Johnson is recovering from a foot injury. On the bright side, no one in the Spurs organization has tested positive for COVID-19.

White and Johnson’s absences in particular may mean fans get an earlier-than-expected look rookie lottery pick Devin Vassell.
