West Ham to ‘resist any approach’ for midfielder Declan Rice from Chelsea

West Ham will do everything in their power to ward of interest from Chelsea in midfielder Declan Rice.

The midfielder, who was released by the Blues at the age of 14, has hinted at the possibility of a return to Stamford Bridge after stating his interest in playing alongside long-time friend Mason Mount at club level once again.

However, according to Goal, the east London club have no intention of letting the England international leave the club this summer.

The 21-year-old has four years remaining on his current deal at the London Stadium, putting the Hammers in a very strong position to rebuff any enquiries.

Reports had suggested that the coronavirus pandemic could force West Ham to part with some of their top stars due to financial issues, with a price of around £70m suggested for the central midfielder.

Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher has suggested Rice could make a move to centre back to make the most of his career.

The central midfielder has started every league game for the Hammers this season in the middle of the park, but the former Liverpool defender reckons he could make a positive switch, as he did in the early stages of his career at Anfield.

‘To be honest, he reminds me a little bit of myself. I started in midfield and became a centre back. I’m a big fan of him,’ Carragher told Sky Sports’ Football Show.

‘At centre back, everything will be in front of him. I think that’s why I was never going to be a great midfield player. In terms of stepping out with the ball, I think he’d be perfect in a back three.

‘Of course, he has to improve in certain areas but every young player has to improve.’
