The Texas Department of Public Safety announced on Friday, November 25 that a multi-vehicle crash that occurred during “heavy holiday rush traffic” on I-35 outside Temple led to the death of two boys from Uvalde. DPS said that an 8-year-old and 13-year-old boys were killed as a result of a chain reaction crash on the highway around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, the day before Thanksgiving, reports KXXV station.

The accident involved four vehicles and led to a build up of standstill traffic for hours. DPS says that a 2017 Nissan Titan pickup truck. driven by a 23-year-old man, lost control of his vehicle and collided with a 2018 Mitsubishi SUV that was carrying the 8-year-old and 13-year-old. The SUV had one male driver and a female passenger.

The two boys were pronounced dead at the scene by Bell County Justice of the Peace Ted Duffield, KXXV reports. The boys’ names have not been released as of Monday, November 28.

A 2016 Ford F-150 carrying a 4-year-old and a 3-year-old as well as a 2015 Ford Versa were also involved in the crash. All others involved, including the man and woman in the SUV, were taken to the hospital but their conditions are unknown. MySA reached out to DPS and Judge Duffield for more information.

The deaths come as the Uvalde community is still reeling from a May 24 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School where 19 kids and two teachers were killed by a gunman.
