Top 10 Rams Games Since 1990-Part 1
The Los Angeles Rams have been around since 1936. A few city changes and a merger later, the Rams have become one of the more successful franchises in the NFL. In that time frame, this franchise has entertained us with some fantastic matchups. This article is to cover the top 10 Rams games since 1990.
Top 10 Rams games: #10- LAR vs. TB (12/6/92)
Coming in at number 10 on our list is the Rams vs. the Bucs from December 1992. LA finished 6-10 that season and this game was pretty meaningless to both squads, but it was one of the greatest games in history. The reason for this game being so unique to the Rams organization is that it marks the largest comeback in franchise history.
The Rams trailed 27-3 at halftime on Sunday night football on the road and looked out of it. Led by Jim Everett, the Rams scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to win the game 31-27. The 24-point comeback is the largest the team has ever overcome, including the playoffs. Everett threw three touchdowns in the victory.
Top 10 Rams games: #9- STL @ HOU (11/27/05)
Next on the top 10 Rams games list, the St. Louis Rams travel to Houston to take on the Texans. It was a November game in 2005 where we saw the birth of “Fitzmagic.” Starter Marc Bulger was out, and backup Jamie Martin suffered a concussion late in the first quarter. The Rams turned to a third-string rookie out of Harvard named Ryan Fitzpatrick
Trailing 24-3 at the half, the Rams stormed back, scoring 21 of the following 24 points. After a 43-yard bomb to Isaac Bruce with 26 seconds left, they recovered an onside kick leading to a game-tying field goal at the end of regulation.
After the defense forced a Houston punt, Fitzpatrick hit Torry Holt twice in overtime for big pickups on crucial downs, including a third and long conversion deep inside Rams territory. Fitzmagic threw his third and final touchdown to Kevin Curtis on a 56-yard screen pass giving the Rams a 33-27 win in overtime, completing the second-largest comeback in franchise history.
Top 10 Rams games: #8- STL @ CHI (11/16/03)
The St. Louis Rams had great moments, including multiple 12+ win seasons and playoff births. Coming off of a disappointing 2002 season, the Rams looked to stay in playoff contention when they traveled to Chicago to take on the Bears.
Chicago was 3-6 heading into play and should’ve been an easy matchup for the 6-3 Rams, as St. Louis was a six-point favorite. But when the Rams fell behind 14-3 at halftime, it didn’t look so good. St. Louis stormed back in the second half scoring 20 unanswered points and holding a six-point fourth-quarter lead.
After giving up the lead late, Jeff Wilkins split the uprights with 35 seconds left to give the Rams a 23-21 victory. This game makes our list due to the significance of the win. This win ended up being the difference between a first-round bye and playing the wild card round vs. the Packers. Which is why it makes the top 10 Rams games list.
Top 10 Rams games: #7- STL @ SEA (10/10/04)
The Rams traveled to Seattle for a division matchup with the Seahawks in October 2004. The Rams again fell behind at halftime and trailed 27-10 late in the second half. The Rams scored 17 straight points to tie the game, led by Marc Bulger and two touchdown passes.
Once the game went into overtime, the Rams possessed the ball first and went to work. In only seven plays, St. Louis found the endzone on a 52-yard touchdown pass to Shaun McDonald for the 33-27 win. The win gave the Rams a tie-breaker over the Saints at the end of the year and secured them a five-seed in the playoffs. The ramifications of the win make it an even bigger lock for the top 10 Rams games list.
Rams Top 10 games: #6- LAR @ NOR (1/20/19)
This game being on my top 10 Rams games list, will probably raise some controversy. We all know what this game is known for and the controversy surrounding the ending of this NFC Championship game. These two teams met earlier in the season in New Orleans, where the Saints came out with a 10-point win. With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, both teams gave us a memorable game for multiple reasons.
The Saints jumped out early to a 13-0 lead and led by 10 points early in the second half after LA cut into the initial lead. The Rams put together a 10-play drive in the third quarter for a touchdown and then a field goal in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Then a missed pass interference call led to the saints taking a three-point lead into the dying minute of the fourth. The Rams tied the game with 19 seconds left, sending it to overtime.
The Saints won the coin toss and did nothing with it. In three plays, the LA defense forced Drew Brees into an interception. A few plays later and Greg Zuerlein pounded a 57-yard field goal to give the Rams a 26-23 victory. This win punched LA’s ticket to the Super Bowl for the first time in nearly two decades.
