Texas State football player Khambrail Winters killed during drug deal gone wrong, police say

Two people have been charged in connection with the shooting death of a Texas State football player during a drug deal gone wrong, according to San Marcos police.

Enalisa Briana Blackman and Michael Tyreek Ifeanacho, both 20, were charged with capital murder in the death of 20-year-old Khambrail Winters.

San Marcos police were called to the Lodge Apartments, located at 1975 Aquarena Springs Drive, around 9 p.m. for reports of shots fired. When they arrived, they found Winters with a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite life-saving efforts, Winters died at the scene.

Witnesses told police that Winters was with Blackman and Ifeanacho at the apartment complex to buy marijuana. During the deal, someone shot Winters. Police did not say who pulled the trigger.

Blackman and Ifeanacho were charged because of their involvement in the incident. In Texas, an individual can be charged with capital murder for their involvement in a crime that results in death

Police are trying to identify two other individuals involved in the shooting and attempting to locate additional witnesses.

Winters was a defensive back in his sophomore year at Texas State. He earned an All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention as a freshman last season after starting nine games at defensive back and making 52 tackles. He has not played during the 2020 season because of a torn ACL he suffered during training camp.

“We will stand together as a team and support one another during this very difficult time. Our thoughts and condolences are with Khambrail’s family and loved ones,” Texas State University Football Coach Jake Spavital said in a news release, adding that the team is “deeply saddened” by the death.

Winters’ teammates also took to social media to express their disbelief, with the hastag #LongLive1, representing Winters’ uniform number.

Investigators are asking for any surveillance video of the area around the shooting or in the parking lot near Building 4 of the complex. The apartment’s surveillance video was not working.

Anyone with surveillance video or information is asked to call 512-753-2317 or email [email protected].

This is the third homicide investigation in San Marcos this year.
