Texas Monthly remembers everything Manu Ginobili has done for San Antonio

Manu went from not knowing where San Antonio was to embracing the city like few others have.

It may have been nearly a week since Manu Ginobili’s jersey was retired, but that doesn’t mean anyone is done celebrating him. (Although let’s face it: no one will ever be done celebrating Manu.) This time it’s Texas Monthly giving him a front page piece, remembering his career and a quick reminder of why he was so special to San Antonio.

The Spurs’s dynasty has been a crucial part of San Antonio’s identity for decades. Over five championship wins, the relatively drama-free franchise came to be known not as a one-man team, but as a well-oiled machine where each player played a role in its success. With Ginobili’s retirement, the city isn’t just saying goodbye to someone who helped build that dynasty—it’s saying farewell to someone who made fans feel like they were a part of it. While most of the Spurs are beloved, the bilingual basketball player from Argentina clicked with fans in the largely Hispanic city in a way the others couldn’t.

With his jersey now forever hanging in the rafters of the AT&T Center, Manu will always be a part of San Antonio’s culture and history. Hopefully he keeps hanging around for a long time to come. He will always be welcome and beloved.
