Texans GM on QB situation: ‘We’re all at the same point, essentially’

Houston Texans owner Cal McNair said last week that he did not have “anything new” about the situation involving disgruntled quarterback Deshaun Watson, who reportedly requested a trade before he learned he was facing at least 22 civil lawsuits alleging acts of sexual assault and misconduct. 

The Texans acquired Tyrod Taylor and also Ryan Finley during the offseason and then spent a third-round draft pick on Stanford signal-caller Davis Mills, and general manager Nick Caserio seemed happy with his QB room when speaking at the Houston Texans Charity Golf Classic on Monday.  

“We’re all at the same point, essentially,” Caserio explained, per Grant Gordon of the NFL’s website. “We’re early in the offseason program. It’s a teaching time of year. So, the next phase will be Phase Two, so that will entail some other things. Again, we’ll take it one step at a time. We’re not going to put any unreasonable expectations on anybody. It’s kind of a waste of everybody’s time. It’s how do they improve? Can they make adjustments? What do they do one day? OK, can they stack multiple days together? Look, they’re going to have setbacks. You’re going to go out there, you’re going to have a bad play. OK, how do you respond to that? Can you make the adjustment? Do you understand why that happened? Those are the types of things right now that are really important.” 

Watson’s status for 2021 remains up in the air, as he could be banned from playing for part or all of the season via either the NFL’s personal conduct policy or the commissioner’s exempt list even if he wins cases or settles out of court. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported during the draft that some individuals inside of NFL circles believe the star 25-year-old won’t play until the 2022 campaign at the earliest.
