Study: The average San Antonian will only be able to pay half a month’s rent with new stimulus check

The $600 stimulus check some Americans are already receiving from the federal government is only enough to pay about a half a month’s rent in Texas, according to a Rent.com study.

The home and apartment rental search site released its findings in September. On average, Americans pay $1,621 per month for a one-bedroom apartment. The average is $1,128 in San Antonio, according to the study. In Texas, the average studio apartment was $1,334 per month, $1,271 for a one bedroom and $1,576 for a two bedroom, the study found. One bedrooms in Houston average $1,235 per month and over $1,500 in Dallas and Austin.

A study conducted by TransUnion, a consumer credit reporting agency, said that nearly half of lower-income consumers reported in November that they desperately need a stimulus check to get by. According to the TransUnion study, 40 percent of participants said they are relying on the prospect of another stimulus check to help them pay their bills and another 20 percent said they will be using their stimulus check to pay a current bill or loan.

When the federal government distributed the first round of stimulus checks of $1,200 in the spring, Northwestern University researchers said many citizens were using the funds for necessities and to catch up on bills.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday voted to increase the amount of  the stimulus to $2,000. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, however, has blocked the Senate from voting on the increase.
