Sneaker Spotlight: Rudy Gay’s Puma Clyde Court “Red Blast”

Rudy Gay is back with Puma and sporting some colorful kicks.

After a short spell wearing Nike while Puma sorted out some issues he was having with their sneakers, Rudy Gay is back to wearing the Clyde Court. Though he’s mainly gone with Spurs-themed colorways on his shoes this season, Gay has rocked a vibrant, non-Spursy pair on more than one occasion, including last night’s win over the Pelicans.

Though NBA players are notorious for getting “Player Edition” colorways of their sneakers, this particular colorway is available for purchase on Puma’s website. Known as, “Red Blast,” the combination of red and yellow almost make this particular shoe seem orange when viewed from different angles.

Tech-wise, its loaded with Puma’s IGNITE foam in the mid-sole and NRGY beads. IGNITE is supposed to provide responsive cushioning with a polyurethane sole. The NRGY beads, which are similar to the tech found in Adidas’ Boost line, are located in the sole of the shoe and provide perfect and adaptable cushioning. If you’re confused by the concept of NRGY beads, the video here provides a great explanation.

If you’re interested in rocking the same shoes as Rudy, you can buy this very colorway from Puma’s website for a modest $120. That does seem crazy when talking about a shoe that you’re going to end up destroying from use, but its a steal when compared to the price of new release and Retro Jordans (anywhere from $160-225), KD’s ($150), Lebron’s ($185 for new models). The primary competition for this shoe would be Adidas’ Harden 3 ($140) and Dame 5 ($115), and NIke’s Kyrie 5 ($130) and PG 3 ($110).

Personally, I would go with one of the Nike shoes, just because I prefer their look and feel, but the Puma brand holds a lot of nostalgia for older fans that grew up wearing them and idolizing Walt Clyde Frazier. I have yet to see the Puma’s in a store as well, so I haven’t been able to at least try them on and get a feel for them on my feet. Maybe this summer?
