Sergio Aguero will miss Manchester City’s clash with Brighton

Sergio Aguero is set to miss at least three more games for Manchester City as he self-isolates.

Aguero has only made three starts in a total of nine appearances for City this season after returning from knee surgery, and has yet to complete 90 minutes for the club.

The Argentina star missed Sunday’s FA Cup win over Birmingham after becoming the latest City player to self-isolate and is likely to be out for the Premier League games at home to Brighton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. It remains to be seen if he will be available to face Cheltenham Town in the fourth round of the cup.

Asked about Aguero’s situation, manager Pep Guardiola said: ‘Quarantine, isolating. The rules, I think after nine or 10 days he will be back.’

Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker returned to action against Birmingham after testing positive for Covid, while Eric Garcia and Cole Palmer have also been isolating.

‘(Aymeric) Laporte is injured and Nathan (Ake) is injured,’ said Guardiola ahead of Wednesday’s game against Brighton. ‘Eric isolated. Cole Palmer isolated. The rest I think are okay.’

Graham Potter’s side are without a win in eight Premier League games and needed penalties to see off Newport County of League Two in the cup at the weekend.

But Brighton’s results haven’t always mirrored their performances and Guardiola is expecting a tough test against a team and manager he admires.

‘They are a joy to watch, and a joy to analyse,’ he added. ‘At the same time when you see them you are concerned about the quality.

‘I said to the players today that we will have to be in the highest standards to complete against them. They have better stats in all the departments except the final third.

‘I am a big fan of Graham Potter. We faced him for the first time with Swansea. Everyone plays in his position and the ball comes.

‘They have the courage to play. I like a lot how they play and it will be a big test.’
