The Mavs handed the Spurs their second straight loss.
The Mavs started hot against the Spurs, with Seth Curry leading all scorers with 10 in th first. Tony Parker was aggressive driving to the rim with sixx points contributing San Antonio’s 28-27 lead after one. The Mavs’ 6-10 shooting from three helped them stay close, compared to 1-2 from the Spurs.
The Spurs started the 2nd with much more fire, scoring eight unanswered in the first two minutes, including a fourpoint play from second-time starter Davis Bertans. The Spurs slowly built the lead to 14 with aggressive drives, scoring 24 points in the paint to eight for the Mavs, but only took a 10-point lead into the half, 59-49.
The Mavs came out swinging in the 3rd, getting within one after Wesley Matthews got a steal off Kawhi and hit a three… but Kawhi got his revenge the next play on a steal+dunk. The Mavs took their first lead since the first off a mid-range jumper by Devin Harris to make it 73-72. The Spurs looked a bit out-of-sorts in the third, taking bad shots and getting generally out-played by the young Mavs, and picking up successive offensive fouls after the Mavs took their lead. The Spurs ended the quarter with an 81-77 lead, thanks to a rattled in three by Manu.
The Spurs’ old nemesis, Dirk Nowitzki, hit his patented fade-away flamingo shot to start the final period, and Dallas quickly took an 85-83 lead after a Dirk thre a few plays later. The Mavs ballooned the lead to nine late in the 4th, and Pop called time after a Barnes jumper to make it 100-92 with just over three minutes left. The Spurs pulled within 3 and after a cluster under the Spurs basket, the Mavs got a timeout right as Danny Green stole the ball, sending Pop into a tizzy. It proved to be a difference maker, as Seth Curry got free for an easy layup and the Spurs couldn’t recover, as the Mavs held off the Spurs final flurry for their first win in San Antonio since 2010.
Seth Curry led the Mavs with 24 points, a career high for him, and Kawhi led the Spurs, also with 24.
