Report: Former Rams, Patriots RB Sony Michel to sign with Dolphins

Former New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams running back Sony Michel is set to join a crowded backfield with the Miami Dolphins, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Michel, 27, was one of the Patriots’ two first-round picks in the 2018 NFL Draft and spent three seasons with the team before he was traded to the Rams just before the start of the 2021 regular season. In three years with New England, Michel had 2,292 rushing yards, 258 receiving yards and 15 total touchdowns.

In his only season with the Rams, Michel rushed for 845 yards with four touchdowns and had 125 receiving yards with one touchdown grab. He was used sparingly during the team’s postseason run, carrying the ball just 26 times for 80 yards over four games. In the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory, Michel rushed just twice for two yards.

Miami’s rushing attack has been led by Myles Gaskin in the last two seasons, but the team has been aggressive in attempting to upgrade the position this offseason. In addition to adding Michel, the Dolphins signed former Arizona Cardinals running back Chase Edmonds and former San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert in March.

The Dolphins finished the 2021 season 30th in rushing yards and 31st in rushing yards per attempt.
