Report: Cady Lalanne, Adam Hanga sign new deals overseas

The Spurs still own the NBA rights to both former second round picks.

A couple of Spurs stashes have signed new deals to play overseas. Former second round pick Cady Lalanne has reportedly signed with Italian Serie A club Enel Brindisi.

The Spurs drafted 6’-10” Haitian big man out of the University of Massachusetts with the 55th pick in 2015. Lalanne has participated in the last three summer leagues for the Spurs. At the club level, he played for the Austin Spurs during the 2015-16 season, where he was named an All-Star after averaging averaging 12.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 1.2 blocks. He has also played for the Capitanes de Arecibo of the Puerto Rican League and Zhejiang Golden Bulls in the Chinese Basketball Association.

As previously reported, the Spurs’ 2011 second round draft pick Adam Hanga signed a €7.5 million, three-year offer sheet with Barcelona earlier in the summer.

Although the tweet above and report on the official signing say the deal is with Barcelona, it was also reported back in July that his current club Baskonia matched the offer and therefore retained him, similar to how restricted free agency works in the NBA. It is unclear if something changed, if there was an error in what went down, or if there’s some translation confusion and it’s being called Barcelona’s deal since they initially made the offer.

Regardless, the point still stands that the Hungarian swingman and Euroleague Defensive Player of the Year will not be joining the Spurs any time soon after previous reports indicated he was ready to make the jump overseas.

A couple of reasons have been floated around about his change of heart. One possibility is he reportedly wanted to see if Manu Ginobili retired before signing with the Spurs to ensure a larger role, and that did not happen. However, he signed Barcelona’s offer a couple of weeks before Ginobili made his decision.

More likely, the fact that the deal he was offered to stay in Europe is worth far more ($2.8 million per season) than the veteran’s minimum the Spurs could offer the former 59th pick ($815,000) played a large role in his decision to stay overseas. If the Spurs do decide to sign the 28 year-old at any point during his current contract, they will owe his club approximately $1.76 million to attain his services.

The Spurs still hold the draft rights to both Lalanne and Hanga, meaning no other NBA franchise can sign them without trading for their rights or the Spurs waiving them.
