Open Thread: The Spurs play the #1 team on the aptly named Resurrection Sunday

Six games in eleven days will finalize the seeding.

The Spurs are in 4th place. It is theirs to own. The 1 and 2 seeds are pretty much set. The Portland Trailblazers have a stranglehold on the 3rd spot. But 4-8 is too close to call. There are some important match-ups today, so without further ado-

(a) Spurs host the Rockets at 2:30 p.m. on ABC. The Spurs must win to stay in the 4th spot. If not, they will drop because

(b) The New Orleans Pelicans (8) host the Oklahoma City Thunder (6) on NBA TV at 5:00 pm. The Thunder are a half-game above the Pelicans and a half-game below the Spurs. If the Spurs lose, the winner of this one knocks the Spurs out of the 4th spot. But wait, it gets more complicated.

(c) At 6:00 pm. the Timberwolves (5) host the Utah Jazz (7) at 6:00 p.m. Just like Pelicans/Thunder game, the Timberwolves are half-game above the Jazz and half-game below the Spurs. Again, the winner of this match can take the Spurs down a rung.

There are so many ways this can go.

Best case scenario, the Spurs win, maintain 4th and the bottom four seeds all continue this square dance.

But let’s get into the what-ifs:

Long version: I created 4 sets of tables in the event the Spurs lose. The four scenarios cover the four possible outcomes of the two games (scenario 1— Timberwolves and Thunder win, scenario 2— Timberwolves and Pelicans both win, scenario 3— Jazz and Thunder win, scenario 4— Jazz and Pelicans win).

Short version: In ALL FOUR SCENARIOS, if the Spurs lose they drop to 6th seed with a 44-33 record.

In other words, it doesn’t matter who wins or loses for the standings at the end of the day. The SPURS MUST WIN. Sounds like an April Fool’s joke, right? It’s not.

So rooting for these games is relative to where you’d like to see them line-up. Bottom line: GO SPURS GO!

By the end of the Spurs game, we’ll know exactly where they end the day no matter the outcome of any other games.

In other news, The Clippers are still clawing for a playoff spot as they host the Indiana Pacers at 2:30, and the Denver Nuggets hope to keep their dream alive against the Milwaukee Bucks at 7:00 p.m. Honestly, these are peanuts compared to the 4-8 seeding on this particular day. But still, lots going on.
