Open Thread: Spurs waive Josh Huestis

A day in the life of a training camp invitee.

Phone rings. It’s your agent calling.

“Hey, it’s official. You are heading to San Antonio to play with the Spurs.”

You pack your bags. You’re so excited you can barely sleep. You rise early the next morning, jump on a plane, and a few hours later you find yourself walking down the jetway into the South Texas sun.

First stop, sunglasses, cause the future’s so bright. Next stop, car rental. Get on-line and start figuring out where you want to live. Take a drive around the north side toward the Spurs practice facility. Look at some homes with “For Sale” signs on them.

Wait a minute, there’s no state tax here, right? You’re getting pumped. San Antonio is going to be your new home. You stop at a restaurant. The Tex-Mex is everything they made it out to be. I’m eating tacos everyday.

Next day, drive over to the facility. State of the art. There’s Pop laughing with Pau Gasol over in the corner. Tim Duncan is under the rim mixing it up with Jakob Poeltl. Manu Ginobili is on the sideline pointing out a play to Derrick White. Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan are playing one-on-one on the far court.

And then LaMarcus Aldridge walks right up to you.

“What’s good?”

He gives you his patented double-tap before heading over to center court to work out with one of the trainers.

You head into the locker room to drop off your bags and change clothes. And then your phone rings, it’s your agent. Probably checking in on you.

“Sorry, man, the Spurs just waived you. How do you feel about Austin?”

Wai . . . wha???

Such is the plight of the Exhibit 10 training camp invitee. This past month has seen the coming and going of a number of NBA hopefuls. Olivier Hanlan, Julian Washburn, Amida Brimah, and Jaron Blossomgame have all been taken off the training camp roster. Josh Huestis is the latest in a list.

I may be mistaken, but there’s a small chance the Spurs signed me and waived me and I just happened to miss both press releases.
