Open Thread: Spurs making waves with the “quick 3”

As Dan Weiss pointed out in last night’s pregame, the pace of the NBA has sped up over the last few seasons. And this season, the Spurs played in one of the fastest paced games in their season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies.

It is the dawning of a new day, and as such, should be dubbed accordingly.

For the greater part of this century, the Spurs were anchored by the presence of Tim Duncan. Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker. The “Big 3” reigned supreme through four championships, a continuous string of postseason appearances, and consistent All-Star representations. Alas, all three Spurs legends have since retired.

Two years ago, fellow Pounder Bruno Passos playfully referred to the veteran trio of DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Rudy Gay as the “Mid 3” for their refusal to engage in many three point attempts.

This season all three elder statesmen have embraced shots from beyond the arc. This update paired with the youth movement’s uptempo pacing throughout these first three games of the season begs for a new team moniker. Hence, going forward the trio of Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV, and Keldon Johnson will be known as “The Quick 3.”

Their vitality and spirit are ushering in a new era, and it is about time we all acknowledge and accept the changes that are building a contender within the Spurs organization.

The Spurs have a couple of days off before hosting the Los Angeles Lakers for a pair of games at the AT&T Center. Pace will be a big part of the contests, so be sure to root on your San Antonio Spurs.
