Open Thread: Spurs Fiesta court will debut On January 1st

We are just days away from the tip off of the NBA season. The Spurs had a rough go in preseason, but as long-time fans know, Pop doesn’t always play to win in games that don’t count.

In addition to missing six players in the last preseason game, the Spurs were working in two players returning from injuries that kept them out of the bubble.

There is a rough road ahead, but the organization is finding ways to inspire.

Previously it was announced that the Spurs would begin welcoming back fans to the AT&T Center for the New Year’s Day game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Today the official Spurs Twitter account posted that they will also be playing on the newly designed Fiesta court.

This colorful design ties into the Fiesta-themes “city jerseys” that many of us have on our Christmas list (c’mon Santa, I’ve been good) and evokes the era of David Robinson, Avery Johnson, and Sean Elliott that played in the Alamodome in the 90s.

Those Spurs created a strong foundation and although they were consistently in the playoffs, they lacked one piece. After missing the playoffs in 1997 for only the fourth time in franchise history, the Spurs went to the lottery and picked up Wake Forest phenom Tim Duncan, the top player in the draft.

Mirroring that, the Spurs have built a strong core in their recent draft picks (Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, Lonnie Walker IV) and steady veterans (DeMar DeRozan, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, Patty Mills). Still struggling over the hump, San Antonio went to the lottery this offseason after missing the playoffs this season.

Devin Vassell may not be the top pick of the draft but he is already in the discussion for “steal of the draft,” a common Spurs call. His preseason was impressive, and though only a small sample size, a positive view of things to come. He also may be that key piece that ties this crew together and brings back the glory of the Spurs first NBA title.

Then again, it might just be a fancy new floor.
