Open Thread: Spurs fans should be excited about Anthony Mathis
Until a few days ago, we’d been missing our San Antonio Spurs. COVID protocols have locked the Silver & Black in Charlotte while they await a clean bill of health.
If you didn’t shift over to the Austin Spurs telecasts (some of which are available on Fox Sports Southwest with Dan Weiss and Fabricio Oberto), you’re missing some fantastic basketball.
Recognizable players Luka Samanic and Tre Jones had been lighting it up as G-League team league before being called up to play with San Antonio.
But fans should keep their eye on Anthony Mathis.

Coming off his lone season playing for the University of Oregon, he ranked second in the Pac-12 Conference in three-point field goal percentage (45.4 percent, 69-152) and eighth on the Ducks’ single-season list. On Nov. 10, 2019, he became the first Oregon player since Tajuan Porter in 2006 to make nine three-pointers in a game en route to a career-high 30 points. Before transferring to Oregon, he played four seasons at the University of New Mexico where he broke the Lobos’ single-season three-point record (106 made) and was named to the All-Mountain West Third Team.

The former Oregon Duck has turned into a G-League 3-point sharp shooter averaging over 11 points in his 21 minutes. Although he tends to get into foul trouble during this small sample size, with a little defensive coaching, Mathis could be the next Spurs shooting guard.
A Bryn Forbes comparison may be unfair (and a little too early), but is apropos considering the franchise history of development.
If you have a chance to catch the Austin Spurs in the bubble, take note of when Mathis comes off the bench. He adds a firecracker to the floor and immediately requires attention.
