Open Thread: Spurs fans know the true meaning of Memorial Day

You can’t live in Military City U. S. A. without gaining an appreciation and perspective on our nation’s great protectors.

I was fortunate enough yesterday to perform at a retirement party for a U. S. Naval doctor. The backyard bar-b-cue was packed with military personnel, family, and friends. The host and honoree took a moment to talk specifically about Memorial Day and what it meant to him and his family. It reminded me of how blessed I am to live in the United States and just how many people have sacrificed their lives for the continued stability and freedom that this country offers.

And this does not just apply to soldiers. The families, extended and chosen families, neighbors, co-workers, and friends of these selfless volunteers all feel the loss that accompanies the soul of a departed service member.

There are many ways to honor and celebrate these brave men and women. There is possibly no greater way to feel the impact of our nation’s military on this day than visiting Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

There are many other events, parades, cookouts and discounted specials for active service members at locations.

On a national level, there are events ranging from television specials and fireworks and parades to Presidential pardons, depending on your politics, there are truly no end to the options you have.

But no matter what, take time today to thank those who died in the line of duty, as that is what Memorial Day is really about.
