Open Thread: Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon a ‘top Candidate’ for head coach at Colorado State

The three time All-American could return to her alma mater.

Becky Hammon is rumored to be a top candidate for the head coaching spot at Colorado State where she played for the Rams for four seasons. She set CU records including points (2740), points per game (21.92), field goals made (918), free throws made (539), three-point field goals made (365) and assists (538). Her #25 has since been retired by the Rams. Now, Becky might be heading back to the same court that launched her playing career.

Hammon has been setting an impeccable pace for success as an athlete making her way to the sidelines. Since retiring from the WNBA in 2014, she has been courtside with Gregg Popovich as an integral member of the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff.

One year later, Hammon served as head coach for the Spurs during the Las Vegas Summer League. With Kyle Anderson and Jonathon Simmons as her stars, Becky coached the Spurs to the 2015 Summer League Championship. Talk of head coaching abilities became a common conversation ever since and speculation regarding coaching positions has surfaced ever since.

This time last year, Hammon was offered the head coaching position with the University of Florida’s women’s basketball team.

If the coaching position at Colorado works out, Hammon will be the first woman to coach a NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball team.

With a propensity for the label of “woman” to be added to any of Hammon’s accomplishments, R. C. Buford may have put it into a proper perspective:

“It wasn’t a big deal at the time [we hired her] because she deserved every bit of it. We laugh about it. She wasn’t hired because we wanted to be trailblazers or she wanted to be one. She was hired because she was the right person to be in our group.”

”My belief is that the story would last a short time, then it would be not that she’s a trailblazer, it’s that she’s the right fit.”

In addition to the myriad accolades adorning Hammon’s resume, the 6-time WNBA All-Star is the only former San Antonio Star to have her jersey retired. Her #25 proudly hangs from the rafters alongside Spurs legends Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and George Gervin, to name a few.

At her 2014 retirement ceremony, Hammon shared, “Growing up, we didn’t have a WNBA . . . we just played because we loved it.” Having no idea where her passion would take her, Hammon put her heart into the game. Since then, she has been led beyond anything she could “think, dream, or imagine.” Her grit and determination have carried her through her entire career and continue to do her justice.

There is not a Spurs fan out there who wouldn’t want Hammon to remain on the Spurs staff, but we can all agree to support her, wherever her talent takes her.
