Open Thread: Manu Ginobili may have an undisclosed nickname for Boris Diaw

A tweet let the cat out of the bag

For Spurs fans, Boris Diaw will always be Bobo. But is it possible that Manu Ginobili had a nickname for Boris that was unique to their relationship?

The two internationally competitive coffee sipping champions obviously enjoyed one another’s company, but how deep was their friendship?

In his tweet, Manu says “Thank you Gordo and see you soon!” Gordo, in Spanish, means fat. But in Latin cultures can be construed as a term of endearment, provided the recipient does not find it offensive (do not just randomly throw it out to your sensitive cousin while he’s reaching for a second helping of pie after Thanksgiving dinner).

Is it a reference to Boris Diaw having that weight clause in his contract while on the Spurs roster? Gregg Popovich, whose playful relationship with the Frenchman involved conversations about his weight, apparently had a a method for keeping his weight down that Diaw shared with Sports Illustrated:

“Sometimes we’re up 30,” Diaw says, “and he’s like, ‘I’m just going to leave you on the court so you can lose some weight.’”

So is it an inside joke that has made its way out between two retired Spurs? Or was it a simple typo/autocorrect situation?
