Open Thread: Imagining the Spurs season if Tony parker had stayed

No one knew that Dejounte Murray would be out.

It’s hard to believe it, but less than one year ago the Spurs had five players on their roster who had been a part of the 2014 Championship. In a matter of weeks, four would be gone: two in a trade, one to retirement, and one to free agency.

Tony Parker, with the blessing of PATFO, Pounders, and most Spurs fans, left in free agency in hopes of playing greater minutes and a more significant role. He landed in Charlotte, owned in large part by Michael Jordan, one of Parker’s basketball heroes.

In his season with the Hornets, Parker started in no games, which is his first season without a start. Compared to his previous season, his final in the Silver & Black, he actually saw a dip in minutes, about a minute-and-a-half, despite playing one more game overall.

That said, his statistics stayed consistent or changed slightly in either direction.

Of course, the caveat is that he knew he would lose minutes as Dejounte Murray took the starting position and Patty Mills retained the bench spot.

At that time, no one knew Dejounte’s season would end before it had a chance to truly begin.

So looking back, would it have been mutually beneficial for Tony to have stayed with the Spurs, knowing now that Murray would be out?
