Open Thread: I decided to audition for the Spurs Hype Team
One fan’s experience inside the first ever tryouts for the team’s new “time out” entertainment
A few weeks back, the Spurs held an open audition for their new Hype Team — yes, the same Hype Team that was announced on the heels of the dismantling of the Spurs Silver Dancers and Team Energy.
The Spurs said that the Hype Team would incorporate skill sets from both units, and open up the opportunity for people to offer more family-oriented options than just dance. And I decided that I’d see what it was all about first hand.
The first step was to sign up on-line. There were two dates available. July 21st and August August 5th. After creating an account, there was a series of questions about my individual Spurs fandom and some questions about what I would bring to a Hype Team.
I must admit, I felt a certain amount of trepidation as I confronted my personal fears. For one, if the Hype Team was just going to be a combination of the Silver Dancers and Team Energy, then I didn’t have the talent or stamina to even audition.
All of that was secondary to the main issue — I might just be too old to do this.
Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained. So I filled out the questionnaire, paid my $15 entrance fee, and told my wife I was going to be gone on Sunday, August 5th for a portion of the day…
