Open Thread: Determining the face of the Golden State Warriors

As we continue our journey to determine one franchise for each NBA franchise, we land on an interesting conundrum today. Whether the superstars of today can be outshined by the memory of historically great players. It is nothing new, we’ve discussed it with other teams so far, except this time that superstar is Stephen Curry. And the historical player is Wilt Chamberlain.

The argument can be made Wilt never played in Golden State (the Warriors were in Philadelphia but made their way to San Francisco). He also didn’t win a title. And he wasn’t a lifer.

Now a possibly more interesting Gen Z vs. Boomer argument is whether the Death Star and their three NBA titles (along with two Finals losses) is enough to overshadow the era of Run “TMC.” Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin rejuvenated Golden State fans after a decade earning a championship and then fading out of the limelight.

A viable argument for the worth of Kevin Durant can be made based on the Warriors inability to beat a healthy Cleveland Cavaliers without him. Unfortunately, his exodus from the West Coast probably doesn’t sit well with fans. Still and all, Curry, a two-time league MVP was unable to nab the Finals MVP honors in any of the three title runs.

Also, you can’t sleep on Nate Thurmond, the first NBA player to record a quadruple-double. Lastly, Rick Barry was the 1975 Finals MVP. Add underhanded free throws and a reputation for being one of the league’s biggest jerks.

Best betting money would have Stephen Curry retiring in Oakland/San Fran, making him a shoe-in for face of the Golden State Warriors. But until then, he could opt out of his contract in the style of Kawhi Leonard and eliminate his application.

Who do you have for face of the Golden State Warriors?
