Open Thread: Determining the face of the Detroit Pistons
Who is the one true face of the Detroit Pistons?
From a Spurs perspective, it would have to be Sean Elliott in his lone season in Detroit.
Almost looks like it was photoshopped, right?
All kidding aside, there are ten players who have had their jerseys retired by the Pistons, generally a sign that they were of some level of importance to the franchise. In this case, they have all been involved with at least one of the Pistons three NBA Championships.
Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman, Vinnie Johnson, and Bill Lambier were all part of the “Bad Boys” noted for their dismantling of the Lakers-Celtics 80s rivalry. Back-to-back titles in 1989 and 1990 made them the hinge between those storied teams and the Michael Jordan dominance.
Chauncey Billups (is it just me or is Chauncey more of an elderly woman’s cat and less of an NBA star?), Ben Wallace, and Richard “Rip” Hamilton (remember, he tried to make Phantom of the Opera masks fashionable as urban wear) of the 2004 Championship and 2005 failed championship attempt also have their numbers retired.
Pre both of those eras are Dave Bing and Bob Lanier.
Head coach Chuck Daly, owner Bill Davidson, and General manager Jack McClowsky are also honored members of the Pistons retiree banners.
Do any of these guys qualify as the face of the franchise, or is there still a stone left unturned?
