NFL Rumors: Aaron Donald, Nick Foles, Baker Mayfield

In this edition of NFL rumors, we look at the Aaron Donald contract, Nick Foles’ potential new home, and the latest on Baker Mayfield.

Welcome to the Saturday edition of NFL rumors on Full Press Coverage.

Today, we are going to take a look at the Rams and Aaron Donald, the potential new home for veteran quarterback Nick Foles, and the continued questions surrounding the Browns and quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Let’s dive into the latest NFL rumors.

Los Angeles Rams – DL Aaron Donald

Rumor: Both Aaron Donald and the Rams are working towards an extension, however, if the two sides can’t come to an agreement, retirement is still on the table, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

“If it’s not met, retirement can still go down. Adding years to an already existing three-year pact takes Donald well into his mid-30s, and who knows whether he wants to play that long? But that’s the best way for Los Angeles to stretch out the money for cap purposes.”

The first rumors of a potential Aaron Donald retirement were floated during the Super Bowl and apparently, they haven’t quite gone away. Now, as reports have stated, the two sides are still likely to get a deal done and they should be motivated to. For the Rams, they get one of the best defensive players of this generation. For Donald, whatever extension they are discussing is likely going to make him one of, if not the highest-paid player in the league for the foreseeable future. If it does come to retirement, its just another chapter in wild NFL offseason story.

Free Agent – QB Nick Foles

Rumor: Veteran quarterback Nick Foles and the Indianapolis Colts are currently a contract, according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

The Colts have already upgraded their quarterback position with the acquisition of Matt Ryan earlier in the offseason. Of course, the potential addition of Nick Foles in no way threatens Ryan’s job but gives the Colts a great option as a backup. Foles stepped in for then Eagles starter and former Colt, Carson Wentz, en route to a Super Bowl championship in 2017 and could provide Indy with a similar run if called upon late in the season. Naturally, the best-case scenario is that Foles never takes a meaningful snap during the season as Ryan puts together a strong year for the Colts. Since winning Super Bowl LII, Foles spent one more season with the Eagles, followed by a year with the Jags and the last two seasons with the Bears.

Cleveland Browns – QB Baker Mayfield

Rumor: Despite continued interest from the Panthers and Seahawks, there is a “holding pattern” that exists for the Browns when it comes to quarterback Baker Mayfield, per Jeff Howe.

It has been relatively quiet on the Baker Mayfield front for the last few weeks. The Browns have obviously moved on with the acquisition of quarterback Deshaun Watson, despite the bevy of accusers he is currently facing. That could be one of the reasons there is hesitancy, at least from the Browns’ perspective. Perhaps they will ultimately need Mayfield. From the perspective of teams like the Seahawks and Panthers, health could be a concern for a player they will pay a nice sum of money if he is acquired. Either way, it doesn’t seem like a conclusion to the Mayfield saga is coming any time soon.
