Newcastle eyeing Chelsea centre back Fikayo Tomori on loan but face competition from overseas

Newcastle are lining up a loan move for Chelsea centre back Fikayo Tomori in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Tomori impressed during his breakthrough season at Chelsea last term, but has struggled for game-time this campaign due to Thiago Silva’s arrival and Kurt Zouma’s impressive form.

And according to the Telegraph, Newcastle are considering making a loan move for Tomori but they are expected to face tough competition from overseas with at least one big European club interested in his signature.

It is reportedly not yet clear whether Tomori would opt to develop his game in the Premier League or move overseas for experience in a different league.

Tomori, who played 22 times for Chelsea last term before injuries derailed the latter stages of his campaign, has only featured in three games under Frank Lampard this season.

The 22-year-old has only played once in the Premier League this term – coming on as a second half substitute in the defeat against Liverpool – while his other two appearances both came in the Carabao Cup.

Tomori had been part of the Blues’ first-team squad early on this season but Antonio Ruidger’s return to the substitutes bench has meant that the young English defender has missed out altogether recently.

Tomori had turned down a deadline day loan switch to West Ham in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers’ loan pursuit of the England defender was called off just 10 minutes before the transfer deadline closed after the clubs had agreed on a season-long deal.

But Tomori opted to reject a move across London and concentrate instead on earning more experience with the Blues and battling for a place in the first-team.

Before West Ham’s late pursuit, Tomori had been on the verge of signing for Everton on loan but a move failed to come to fruition and the Toffees ended up signing Ben Godfrey.

However, Tomori now has plenty of thinking to do again surrounding his future as he goes in search of regular first-team football.
