‘More hypervigilant’: Sheriff gives update on 18-wheeler found with cleaning crew in San Antonio

UPDATE: Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says that the 14 immigrants found in a semi-truck at the 2000 block of S General McMullen earlier this afternoon were actually a construction cleaning crew.

He said that someone in the area waved down a passing deputy constable and said people were jumping out of the back of the truck. The deputy constable stopped to check the truck, found the 14 people and called for backup. Salazar said that 12 of the immigrants are from Cuba and two are from Nicaragua.

Salazar said that the people are working for a company out of California and were using the semi-truck trailer to store trash. Salazar said the immigrants told him they were doing demolition of old apartments in the area that were out of code.

“Everybody is being a little more hypervigilant than usual,” Salazar said. “That’s fine. I’d rather that than see another tragedy that happened a couple of days ago.”

He said that Homeland Security Investigations is still talking to the people but he believes they are all residents of Bexar County and are here legally. However, they may not be able to work here legally. He said other odd details that piqued HSI is that one Cuban man had an Italian passport.

Original story follows below.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a semi-truck at 2000 block of S. General McMullen in San Antonio containing immigrants believed to have entered the country illegally, according to a Facebook post.

Deputies reportedly found 13 immigrants in the tractor trailer, according to KENS. The post says that it appears none of the people have any major injuries. The sheriff’s office is expected to provide more information soon.

The incident comes less than a week after over 60 immigrants were discovered left in the back of a semi-truck on Quintana Road, 53 of whic later died as a result of the high heat. Law enforcement arrested four men and charged two with the deaths, and the other two with weapons charges related to the case.
