Manchester City star Sergio Aguero says players are ‘scared’ over return of the Premier League

Sergio Aguero has become the most high-profile footballer to raise misgivings over the Premier League‘s potential hastened return.

The Manchester City striker admitted health concerns are at the forefront of minds among squads set to restart training next month despite the death toll from coronavirus staying high.

Clubs are working towards resuming training on May 11, with a stronger picture set to emerge from talks on Friday. Aguero made it clear that players hold reservations.

‘The majority of players are scared because they have family, they have children, they have babies, parents,’ he said.

‘When we go back, I imagine that we will be very tense, we will be very careful, and the moment someone feels ill, you will think: “What’s gone on there?” I hope there is a vaccine so all this ends.

‘It does scare me but I have just been here with my girlfriend. I haven’t had contact with other people.

‘They say that there are people who have it but who don’t have symptoms and they can infect you.

‘That’s why I’ve stayed at home. You can be infected and you don’t know anything about it.’

Aguero has remained in Manchester during lockdown, although a number of his team-mates are still abroad. Premier League stars have been asked to consider flying back in the event of a quick return.

UEFA also looking at completing the current Champions League campaign later this summer, with City holding a 2-1 advantage over Real Madrid in the last 16.

‘Fifteen days ago, we were told about a return date [to training] and that was May 4,’ Aguero added. ‘Now there is a new meeting. It will be difficult to play the Champions League in August.’
