Leicester City ‘face competition for Atalanta’s Timothy Castagne as Napoli join race’

Leicester City could face competition from Napoli in their bid to sign wing-back Timothy Castagne from Napoli, according to reports in Italy.

The Foxes believe Castagne could be a potential replacement for Ricardo Pereira, who is expected to attract interest from across Europe this summer.

But Napoli have now entered the race for the defender, with newspaper Corriere di Bergamo reporting that they’re ready to bid £17.5 million for the Belgian, whose contract expires in June 2021.

The 24-year-old has impressed during his three seasons at the club since he joined from Genk in a £5.7 million deal in 2017.

Last season, Castagne played a starring role as Atalanta secured Champions League qualification, scoring five goals in 35 appearances from a right-back position.

Castagne was recently quizzed about his future and left the door open to a move to another Serie A club or a new challenge in England.

‘I want to end the season in style, after the European Championships, we will see if Atalanta makes it into the Champions League for next season,’ he told Belgian newspaper La Dea.

‘It would certainly not be a bad thing to stay. I also don’t know which teams will contact me, we will see.

‘England has always attracted me, but if a team like Inter or Napoli should knock on the door….those are great teams.’

If Castagne moves to Leicester this summer he’ll join fellow Belgians Youri Tielemans and Dennis Praet, who both moved to the club last summer.

The defender has played alongside the pair at international level having won six caps and scored two goals for the national side.
