Kevin De Bruyne believes the Premier League campaign WILL be finished

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is confident the Premier League season will be completed, but warned of ‘serious problems’ if it fails to happen.

The English top-flight has targeted June 13 as a possible date of return after being shut down by the coronavirus pandemic since early March, with players such as De Bruyne forced to keep their fitness levels up at home.

City are yet to follow other Premier League clubs in returning to the training pitch but are reportedly preparing to welcome the players back next week ahead of the new campaign’s possible restart.

And De Bruyne, who has had another sparkling campaign with nine goals and 18 assists, feels positive about finishing it, albeit behind closed doors.

City are currently second in the league table – 25 points behind league leaders Liverpool – but were still in the FA Cup and Champions League before football was suspended.

‘Is that realistic? My feeling says that we may be able to train again within two weeks,’ he told HLN

‘The government wants to restart football as soon as possible to give people something. Everything will be finished without fans I think. That is not really interesting for anyone, but this season will be finished.’

He said that the consquences of an unfinished season, especially from a financial standpoint, would be too devastating – meaning officials will be determined to get things wrapped up.

‘The financial aspect is far too important in the Premier League,’ he added. ‘If the season is not finished, it will cause serious problems.’

While football fans might be getting excited about having the sport back on their screens, there has been concern from some players about possibly being infected after getting in contact with other stars.

The 28-year-old said he understood those worries and feels their main fear would be passing the virus on to their families, adding: ‘I don’t think they are really afraid of themselves, but of their family. That is mainly the problem for many people.’

De Bruyne’s teammate Sergio Aguero has expressed the same concerns as he prepares to get back to training.

‘The majority of players are scared because they have family, they have children, they have babies, parents,’ he said.

‘When we go back, I imagine that we will be very tense, we will be very careful, and the moment someone feels ill, you will think: “What’s gone on there?” I hope there is a vaccine so all this ends.

‘It does scare me but I have just been here with my girlfriend. I haven’t had contact with other people.’
