Josh McDaniels interviewing for Raiders’ head coaching job Saturday
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is on his way to Las Vegas to meet with Raiders owner Mark Davis and to interview on Saturday for the vacant head coach position. There is reportedly strong mutual interest between the Raiders and McDaniels, who now appears to be the favorite for the position.
Josh McDaniels has two long tenures with the New England Patriots to his name from 2001-08 and again from 2012 to the present. McDaniels is a six-time Super Bowl champion.
In 2009-10, McDaniels served as the Denver Broncos head coach and posted an 11-17 record. He spent the following year with the St. Louis Rams as an offensive coordinator.
The Raiders have also interviewed Patriots executive Dave Ziegler for the team’s vacant general manager position. McDaniels and Ziegler could soon be hired in a package deal to become the new brain-trust of the Raiders organization, but other viable candidates have been interviewed and remain available.
McDaniels is seen as a quarterback-centric coach a bright offensive mind. If Mark Davis hands the reins over to McDaniels, his new coach will have QB Derek Carr under contract for one more season, a dynamic receiving duo in TE Darren Waller and WR Hunter Renfrow, and a stout rushing attack led by RB Josh Jacobs.
Marl Davis appears keen to bring a bit of the Patriot Way to the desert. Among the first candidates interviewed for the head coaching position was Patriots inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo. However, among the candidates for both head coach and general manager are the likes of Todd Bowles (Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator), DeMeco Ryans (San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator), Ed Dodds (Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager), and others.
