Jewish Voices for Peace plans San Antonio conversation about Palestine

The San Antonio branch of Jewish Voices for Peace, a national activist group focusing on the Israel-Palestine conflict, will host a teach-in and conversation surrounding Palestine on Saturday.

The organizers are inviting “all allies of Palestine” for the event at 6:40 p.m., beginning with a reading of names in memorial of Palestinians killed during the conflict.

“We are calling on the San Antonio community to show up in support of Palestine this Saturday evening,” the organization wrote on social media.

Amid rising violence in Gaza, JVFP also held a Tuesday rally in downtown San Antonio in support of Palestine.

The group called upon Mayor Ron Nirenberg to dissolve San Antonio’s Friendship City agreement with Tel Aviv.

“Ron Nirenberg is complicit in those ties to Israel,” one organizer said at Tuesday’s rally in a video posted to JVP’s Facebook. “Our tax dollars should not make us complicit in the genocide of another people.”

Friendship Cities are a step toward becoming a Sister City, per the city’s website. Though Sister City partnerships must be voted on by each city’s respective City Council, Friendship City agreements are signed by respective mayors. San Antonio’s agreement with Tel Aviv was first signed by then-Mayor Julian Castro in 2011.

The teach-in event will take place at the San Antonio Alliance building in Southtown at 120 Adams St.

Face masks will be required for entry and street parking is available for those interested.
