Jerry Jones has ‘great’ conversation with Odell Beckham Jr.’s mother

Despite plenty of flirting between the Dallas Cowboys and Odell Beckham Jr. during the 2022-23 NFL season, the three-time Pro Bowler ultimately opted to take a year away from the game while rehabbing the knee injury he suffered in last February’s Super Bowl LVI. That doesn’t mean Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has abandoned efforts to recruit Bechkham, though.

Speaking with reporters from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Friday night, Jones revealed a chance encounter with perhaps the only person more important to negotiations than Beckham himself — the wideout’s mother. He came away singing her praises.

“We had a great visit there at the [NFL] Honors, and it was real easy for me to see why Odell’s got a lot of his pluses,” Jones said via Michael Gehlken of the ‘Dallas Morning News.’ “She was very impressive – I really felt like I got to know him.”

Jones added that, while he hasn’t talked to Beckham directly, they have communicated indirectly “two or three times.”

Beckham visited the Cowboys, the Buffalo Bills, and his former club, the New York Giants, during the second half of the 2022 season, but a deal never came to fruition. Earlier this week, a report relayed that Beckham had yet to recover fully from the torn ACL suffered against the Bengals, opting to focus on rehab rather than signing with a team.

In January, Beckham posted a workout video, which showed the wideout cutting and accelerating with no noticeable hitch in his step.

If Beckham is healthy, he could be in line for a relatively lucrative deal, though probably not a long-term one. After going the entire 2022-23 season without a contract, Beckham does not have to wait until free agency opens on March 15 to sign with a team.
