‘I couldn’t believe it’: San Antonio business gifts local nurse new motorcycle after hers was stolen

When local nurse Mercedes Suarez found out her 2004 Kawasaki 250 Ninja was stolen, she was “devastated.” During the past three years, she spent hundreds of dollars restoring the motorcycle.
Suarez, a licensed vocational nurse at Brookdale Hamilton Wolfe assisted living facility, told mySA.com her motorcycle was taken on March 31 at her apartment complex on the city’s Northwest Side. Suarez reported the crime to the San Antonio Police Department and officers later found the bike “heavily damaged” 12 minutes away from her apartment on April 7. Arrest and charges were made, according to Suarez.
Alamo Cycle Plex owner Dave Sears said he heard about the crime on a local news station and decided to help out Suarez by gifting her a new 2019 Kawasaki 400 Ninja worth $5,300.

“When I saw the victim was a nurse it touched my heart,” Sears said. “We’re motorcycle people and we understand bikes are more than transportation – they’re truly an extension of a person and their personality. We just wanted to try to turn a negative into a positive.”
Suarez said she appreciates the new bike, adding that it comes during a time in which good news is welcomed. Nurses are considered essential workers during the coronavirus pandemic.
“I couldn’t believe it when they said I was being given a new motorcycle,” the 21-year-old said. “It gives me something positive to look forward to that’s for sure .. even the residents at the facility are excited for me.”
Suarez will pick up her new bike Tuesday afternoon at Alamo Cycle Plex, which is a premier power sports dealership located at 11900 Interstate 10 West.
