H-E-B one of top 10 places to work in U.S. according to Glassdoor

H-E-B is one of the 10 best places to work in the country, according to Glassdoor.

The San Antonio-based Texas grocery giant is ranked No. 10 in the job review company’s annual list of best employers. Bain & Company, a Boston-based management consulting firm, took the lead. H-E-B is the only Texas company on the list.

Glassdoor said the 2021 list is underscored by the coronavirus pandemic, which wreaked havoc on employment and made the ranking of the top 100 places to work “the most competitive to date.” With more than a million company reviews on the site, Glassdoor said making the list is a “major achievement.”

The website explained how the methodology differs from other awards in that the Glassdoor list does not have a nomination process or costs associated. Winners are picked based off feedback provided by employees.

H-E-B moved up from the No. 17 spot since last year. The store ranks higher than Facebook, Apple, Zoom and Pfizer on the current list.

The grocery company has been lauded throughout the pandemic, from celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger to customers, for the response to the life-changing event. H-E-B’s plan for employees, called “Partners,” was part of the heralded management. Right out the gate of the pandemic, H-E-B temporarily upped pay for hourly employees by $2 hour as the staff kept shelves stocked and communities fed throughout the initial shock. Then, H-E-B gave each employee a $500 bonus in October, plus some snazzy socks.

H-E-B employs more than 135,000 people, according to the website. Forbes also highlighted H-E-B in 2020 as one of “America’s Best Employers For Diversity.”
