H-E-B lands in top 5 on Forbes’ Largest Private Companies list
The San Antonio-based grocery giant saw a five percent increase in revenue.

H-E-B has had a good year. It’s been so lucrative, in fact, that it moved up five spots on Forbes Largest Private Companies. The San Antonio-based grocer came in at No. 5 on the 2021 list, jumping up from the No. 10 spot last year with a revenue $32.8 billion — a 5.1 percent increase from 2020.
H-E-B, founded in 1905 by Howard Edward Butt Sr., has over 300 stores in Texas and Mexico. It is still family-owned and operated currently being run by CEO Charles Butt, Howard’s son.
Forbes says H-E-B currently employs 100,000 people.
H-E-B is joined on the list by Cargill at No. 1 and Koch Industries, based in Kansas, which fell to the No. 2 spot this year. Florida-based Publix Super Markets (No. 3) and Virginia-based Mars (No. 4), maker of M&M’s, round out the top five.
