H-E-B enforcing purchasing limits on meat products again

Updated 1:48 pm CDT, Thursday, April 30, 2020

Days after announcing a lift on purchasing limits for food items, H-E-B is reinstating restrictions on meat products.

The grocery store chain maintains a list of purchasing limits for food and non-food items on its website. On Thursday, the site was updated to include new limits on ground beef and chicken, beef, pork and turkey. Customers in San Antonio are limited to one package of ground beef and two packages total (not two of each) of chicken, beef, pork or turkey. The limit applies to stores in Central Texas, the Gulf Coast, the border region, and certain West and North Texas towns, the site says.

Stores in Houston and other areas have different limits.

Notices posted in the meat department at the H-E-B store at 1601 Nogalitos St. say the stores may be temporarily out of stock on some items, but employees are restocking throughout the day.

“Limits are temporary and necessary for you and your neighbors to find the products you need,” the sign reads.

A recent wave of meat plant closures due to the coronavirus has cut production nationwide.

“H-E-B sources most meat products locally from Texas and works with many suppliers across the nation, most which have not been widely impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, however the situation changes daily,” an H-E-B spokesperson said by email. “H-E-B has a strong supply of meat product for our stores. Product limits are in place to protect the supply chain and ensure all customers have access to the products they need and leave some for their neighbors.”
