Graham Potter admitted it was nice to go home victorious following a tough period of suffering for Chelsea after a victory over Leeds that he agreed was massive.

Chelsea claimed just their second win in 12 games against Leeds, in the first of two matches pivotal to his future and ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Borussia Dortmund, which the Londoners will begin a goal down.

Defender Wesley Fofana’s second-half header eased the pressure on a relieved Potter who said: ‘It [the feeling after winning] is better than the opposite, that’s for sure.

‘I’m delighted for the players and I’m delighted for the supporters because they are the most important people at the football club. People care. Players want to win and supporters want us to do well.

‘If you don’t get results it is my responsibility. I accept that. It’s been a tough period for us all and it’s nice to go home with a win. It’s good for confidence and morale.

‘Now we have to prepare for a really exciting game on Tuesday night which I’m sure will be a fantastic occasion and we will try and win. It is [massive]. We’ve had to suffer. The boys have been suffering because they care, they do. Our supporters have been suffering. It’s been a challenging period.’

Fofana, who has had an injury-disrupted season, headed in Ben Chilwell’s 53rd minute corner, Chelsea’s first home goal since mid-January and their first for 397 minutes anywhere.

Potter said: ‘Wesley Fofana has been a big miss for us. He’s one of the players who has been out for a while. He is physical, brave with the ball and does what he does well in the box which is attack the ball. It gave us a win.’

Chelsea clung on after that surviving a late Leeds rally as the tension grew around Stamford Bridge.

Potter said: ‘1-0 in the Premier League, anything can happen, when you consider the run we’re on, it’s not surprising [there were nerves]. The players fought for the win and it allows us to keep moving forward.’

Leeds manager Javi Gracia said: ‘It was because our team did good things to put Chelsea in that situation. We tried to look for the goal through set-pieces, corner kicks, different ways in counters, attacking play but I’m sure they needed the points and in that moment after many games without getting good results they were a little bit, I don’t know, frightened. I don’t know the word. Sorry if I make a mistake.’

He added: ‘It’s the same in the last game we played in the FA Cup [against Fulham]. We created 15 shots, 12 of them were on target and we have to improve. We are creating away from home and have many chances to score. But if you don’t score, you don’t win.’
