Gary Neville hails ‘brilliant’ Edouard Mendy for making ‘world class saves’ against Brentford

Gary Neville has heaped praise on Edouard Mendy for his performance during Chelsea‘s 1-0 win over Brentford on Saturday.

Chelsea secured a 1-0 victory over Brentford to return to the top of the Premier League table. However, it was Mendy that caught Neville’s attention after making several ‘world class saves’.

The former Manchester United defender said the Chelsea goalkeeper was ‘absolutely brilliant’ and admitted he could be the difference between the Blues winning the title or not.

Speaking after the game on Saturday afternoon, Neville said: ‘He [Mendy] was absolutely brilliant.

‘If you’re going to win a title there are going to be games where you don’t play well, you don’t deserve to win the game but your goalkeeper makes two or three world class saves. He was brilliant today Mendy.’

Neville also said that Mendy could have the same impact on the Chelsea squad as Alisson does on Liverpool or Ederson does on Manchester City.

‘He has made that difference, if you think of Kepa in goal for Chelsea when Frank [Lampard] was there, it was a big problem, they were conceding too many goals,’ he added.

‘It got to the point where he wouldn’t even dive for it, it was in the middle of his net, two metres away from the post.’

‘It’s a lot more difficult to score against Chelsea, not just because of the change to the back five, which Thomas Tuchel brought in, but also the goalkeeper.’

Mendy was awarded the Man of the Match award for his stellar performance on Saturday afternoon.

He had an inspired final quarter of the game denying Ivan Toney, Saman Ghoddos and Pontus Jansson – with his face – before saving the very best for last: a stunning reaction stop to divert Christian Norgaard’s overhead kick onto the bar and over.

Speaking of the pressure Chelsea were under and the impact Mendy had, Ben Chilwell said: ‘It was pretty much hell on earth the last 20 minutes. We have got Edou to thank, he’s amazing. He is getting the credit he deserves.’

Chilwell went on to say: ‘He [Mendy] was superb. We see it everyday in training. He gets the credit he deserves.’
