Gary Neville claims it is too early to consider Jadon Sancho as one of the best players in the world

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has suggested that it is too early to consider Jadon Sancho as one of the world’s best players.

The Borussia Dortmund winger has made a tremendous impact this season, as evidenced by his return of 17 goals and 19 assists in 35 appearances.

Sancho, who is reportedly valued at £100m by Dortmund, has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea.

Neville claims that, while the 20-year-old is a hugely talented player, he cannot yet be compare with the standout players in world football.

‘To be honest, Jadon Sancho in this moment of time… we get carried away,’ Neville told Sky Sports.

‘I think we’ve got an amazing group of young English players. But we have to consider the other players that exist, Brazilian players, Argentine players, German players, Belgium players, we are not the only country in the world.

‘That’s how it was as an England player and an England coach, ‘we have a golden generation’. You say golden generation and obviously it was Becks, Stevie, Frank, Rooney, but then Brazil had Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, what’s that… platinum?

‘You say we have a golden generation but you forget these other countries have world stars. It’s like, ‘hang on a second’. Argentina have Aguero, Higuain, Messi, Di Maria, how good are they compared to Jadon Sancho? Jadon Sancho is nowhere near these players.’

Neville added that Sancho needs to be winning major trophies on a regular basis to be considered an elite player.

‘Let’s be clear, Jadon Sancho is a talent, but we can’t start putting him in the category with world stars who are winning European cups and World Cups regularly, season in season out.’

Sancho has already made an impact for England, scoring twice in eleven appearances so far, and seems set for a very bright future at both club and international level.

His current contract at Dortmund is set to run until the summer of 2022, but there remains much speculation regarding his future, and it will be intriguing to see whether Sancho will return to English football at some stage.

After starting out at Watford and then moving to Manchester City, Sancho joined Dortmund in 2017 in a move that has worked out extremely well.
