Game Thread: San Antonio Spurs at Mavericks

Welcome to the Game Thread. Veterans of the Game Thread know how we do things around here, but for all you newbies we have a few rules. Our community guidelines apply and basically say be cool, no personal attacks, don’t troll and don’t swear too much.

After a road-and-road series against the Nuggets, the Spurs return to Texas to face Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs have been hot lately, and they outplayed the Spurs the last time the two teams met behind a superior interior performance from Kristaps Porzingas. The Spur are on a bad run, losing 10 of their last 12, and sinking down in the standings, in danger of not even making the play-in this year. But the Silver and Black showed signs of improvement on Friday night, climbing out of an 18 point deficit to the Nuggets in the second half behind Derrick White and Dejounte Murray to have a shot at overtime, even though they couldn’t stop Nikola Jokic. Keldon Johnson’s layup attempt in traffic rimmed out and Demar couldn’t make the putback as time ran out for a two point loss.

The Spurs, to have a shot at winning tonight, are going to have to find the intensity they played with late in the game against the Nuggets for a bigger part of the game. The defensive lapses need to be cleaned up, and the team has to value possessions. The defense can’t stop Luka Doncic, but they will need to slow him some and not let Porzingas go wild like he did in the last meeting.

Once again, I’m asking you to play for 48 minutes, Not 24 or 36 if you want to win these visits, because if you don’t play the whole game, the end results are guaranteed to be lame.
