Driver charged with intoxication manslaughter after 2 killed in 2 crashes

A suspected intoxicated, wrong-way driver caused two major crashes that killed two people early Christmas Eve, according to authorities.

The first crash occurred at about 2:45 a.m. when an unidentified man driving eastbound on SE Loop 410 crashed underneath the trailer of an 18-wheeler to avoid the wrong-way driver traveling westbound, police said. The man driving eastbound was pronounced dead at the scene.

About three minutes later, the wrong-way driver crashed into a vehicle and killed the driver, who was traveling eastbound on Loop 410 near Roosevelt Road, authorities said. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene and identified as 33-year-old Jay Simon Mejia.

The wrong-way driver and his passenger exited their vehicle before it caught fire, police said. The two were transported to University Hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

Authorities said the wrong-way driver was found to be intoxicated and booked for intoxicated manslaughter.
