Determining Reggie Miller as the face of the Indiana Pacers

The Indiana Pacers have won three titles. Clarification, the Indiana Pacers won three ABA titles. Since joining the NBA, the Pacers have only made it to the Finals one time. Head coach Larry Bird and the Pacers won two games, but in the end fell to the Los Angeles Lakers (the first of their “three-peat”).

From 1988 to 2002 (and again in 2005), the player with the highest winshare percentage was Reggie Miller. Possibly one of the most underrated stars of the era, Reggie Miller’s hype always took a backseat to Magic and Larry, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, The Detroit Bad Boys, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Kobe and Shaq, and Tim Duncan.

Never winning a title has hindered Reggie’s legacy, but not his importance to the Indiana Pacers, the only team he played for.

The only other players with retired numbers in Indiana are Roger Brown and Mel Daniels (last 60s/early 70s) and George McGinnis (from the 70s). Coach Bobby Leonard from the same ABA dynasty era is also hanging in the rafters. Reggie Miller is the only NBA era player to be celebrated by the Pacers.

I found this humorous- according to Wikipedia, these are the various “eras” of the Pacers: ABA Dynasty, Early NBA struggles, Reggie Miller era, 2005-2010 era, Paul George era, and Post-George era. There’s more mention of coaches (Larry Brown era, Larry Bird era, Isiah Thomas era) than significant players.

Miller’s NBA career may have been overshadowed by other superstars, but his impact on his one team is paramount. The fact that he edged his way into calling games after retiring has kept his face visible for all to see.

Reggie Miller is the undisputable face of the Indiana Pacers.
