Giroud was set to become a free agent at the end of the season, and had only remained at the west London club in January after attempted moves away collapsed.

Giroud’s deal was set to run out on June 30, but Chelsea have moved to protect their player’s value with clubs remaining uncertain over how the current pandemic will impact the market.

Chelsea ultimately failed to sanction a move amidst interest from Inter and Lazio after failing to recruit a replacement.

The veteran international initially struggled to break into Frank Lampard’s first-team plans this season, with Tammy Abraham favoured to lead the line instead.

But after the young striker suffered an ankle injury against Arsenal in January, Giroud was afforded opportunities to impress and netted crucial goals against Tottenham and Everton.

Giroud has made just nine starts in total this season, scoring three goals.
