Chelsea keep Stamford Bridge open for individual training sessions during government lockdown

Chelsea‘s Marco van Ginkel has revealed players who live close to Stamford Bridge are able to complete individual training sessions at the ground.

Several Premier League stars are taking part in home workouts with many players having makeshift gyms in their houses while the shutdown due to the coronavirus continues.

But the Blues have kept their stadium open for members of their squad who live within a close distance.

‘The boys who live nearby can train in the stadium. So this is ideal for me. You only have to train on your own, so it is a bit boring,’ he told PSV TV.

‘But I also trained in a park and the field is a lot less there. It’s top-notch in Stamford Bridge.’

The midfielder posted a video of his training on Instagram with the caption: ‘Staying in as much as possible, but happy to live close to the stadium and do my training.’

Van Ginkel is still working his way back to fitness after suffering a long spell on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament injury.

Jose Mourinho was in charge the last time the midfielder played for Chelsea and he has had three loan spells with AC Milan, Stoke City and PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutchman captained PSV to the Eredivisie title in May 2018 but he has not played a competitive game since.

There were complications after he had an operation on his cruciate meaning he underwent three surgeries in six days to fix a serious and aggressive infection in his knee.

Van Ginkel is out of contract in the summer but the club have the option to extend his deal by two years but talks have not taken place.

He added: ‘We haven’t had contact about that yet, but other things are of course more important now. I will hear it when the moment arrives.’

Frank Lampard was still a player at the club when Van Ginkel arrived from Vitesse Arnhem for a fee of £8million.

But his future looks uncertain with only four senior appearances since joining in 2013.
