Bernardo Silva believes Manchester City players have been unfairly snubbed for PFA awards

Bernardo Silva believes that Manchester City stars have been unfairly snubbed for PFA Player of the Year awards in the past.

The 25-year-old admitted a Liverpool player is more likely to clinch the highly-coveted gong at the end of the current season, with the club on course to win the Premier League for the first time in three decades.

Silva highlighted a trend of his team-mates missing out on individual silverware in previous campaigns during a live Instagram interview on Monday afternoon.

Liverpool key performers Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have clinched the Player of the Year award over the last two terms, with Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling falling short despite their own superb form.

And Silva lauded wing wizard Salah, before admitting that members of City’s squad appear set to once again miss out on the award due to Liverpool’s rampant form at the top of the table.

‘I hope this is not a bad example, and people don’t take it badly. But I always think about the last three seasons, Man City and Liverpool,’ Silva told Bleacher Report. ‘Three seasons ago, we win the league and they were 30 points behind. Kevin de Bruyne, unbelievable season, Mo Salah scores a lot of goals, he’s a great player and I admire him a lot, and they give the award to Mo Salah.

‘The season after, very tight. Raheem Sterling was on the run with (Virgil) van Dijk, they give the award to van Dijk. This season again, Kevin de Bruyne, another unbelievable season.

‘We’re behind, but because Liverpool are champions probably one of them is winning the award again.’

Silva also believes that two particular City icons should have received greater recognition.

He added: ‘I think about David Silva, Sergio Aguero never won the PFA Player of the Year. I think the individual awards are very relative.’

The former Monaco star reserved particular praise for City prodigy Phil Foden, and believes that the 19-year-old has the potential to become one of the world’s best – provided his long-term future remains at the Etihad.

‘Phil is a fantastic player with a great future ahead of him,’ Silva said. ‘If he stays for a long time he’s definitely going to be one of the best midfielders in the world.

‘I think it’s a good opportunity for him when David [Silva] goes to play more and have a firm position in the team. He needs to stay calm, to work a lot and his opportunities will come. Whenever he plays he’s great. I am sure in the near future he will be a very important player for Man City.’
