Becky Hammon is ready to be the NBA’s first female head coach

Becky Hammon has revealed what Spurs fans already know: she is ready to be an NBA head coach when the time comes. In a sitdown with NBC’s Hoda Kotb (yet to be aired), Hammon discussed what she was thinking when she technically become the first woman to coach a regular season NBA game during a match-up between the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers on December 30, 2020, after Gregg Popovich got himself tossed.

“I mean, this ball is never moving fast enough, in my opinion. People don’t like doing something new and different. It’s uncomfortable. It takes massive amount of risk. Somebody’s going to have to take a chance.”

She also hinted at when she thinks she will take the plunge into head coaching, perhaps providing a hint at where she thinks it will be:

“In some ways, I feel like it could be in a year. In other ways, it could be 10 years. I’m not really sure. What I’m sure of is, I’ll be ready.”

Maybe a year. I have suggested this before, but my opinion is that Pop’s goal is to coach until he passes Don Nelson in overall wins for an NBA head coach. He is currently at 1,308 wins: just 27 behind Nelson’s 1,335, which should be more than achievable by next season. If that is the “year” she is talking about, maybe that’s a hint that she’s aiming to be his predecessor.

Regardless of when or where it is, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that she is up for the job and hopefully for Spurs fans, she is willing to wait Pop out.
