49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo limited in practice Tuesday

It appears San Francisco 49ers fans will spend at least a couple of midweek days wondering about the status of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, this time ahead of this Saturday’s playoff game at the Green Bay Packers.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Garoppolo would be limited during Tuesday’s practice session. The 30-year-old had been dealing with a Grade 3 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb and a chipped bone before this past Sunday’s wild-card win at the Dallas Cowboys, and he then picked up what Shanahan referred to as a “slight” sprain to his right (throwing) shoulder in the second quarter of the contest.

Despite the issues, Garoppolo remained in the Dallas game and completed 16-of-25 passes for 172 yards with no touchdowns and one interception en route to helping his club clinch an upcoming showdown with top-seeded Green Bay. Rookie Trey Lance is Garoppolo’s backup and presumably would enter the lineup if Jimmy G can’t go at Lambeau Field, but recent history suggests the veteran is merely taking it easy and could even be removed from the injury report, entirely, by Friday evening.

Nevertheless, his availability will be something to keep an eye on over the next several days.
